We have had great fun celebrating Chinese New Year this week. We have learnt a lot and was able to explore different Chinese items, including Chinese red money envelopes, a lantern and a Chinese scroll. We also made our own Chinese dragons and danced with these and tried some Chinese food
As part of our learning, Dosbarth Miss Powell investigated conductors and insulators of electricity. There was some excellent scientific discussion on the types of materials that conduct electricity and the use of conductors and insulators in real-life contexts.
Dosbarth Mrs Curtis and dosbarth Miss Powell are investigating how recipes had to be re-invented during World War 2, due to food shortages and rationing. Both classes discussed what types of food you could grow in your garden that could be added to cakes, instead of other hard to get ingredients. We decided that if you could put carrots in a cake, then maybe you could use other vegetables too.
This week we have made beetroot chocolate cake.
We were all a bit put off by the thought of beetroot in cakes. However once we tasted them, we discovered they were delicious!
We have all made a WW2 recipe book that we will add a new recipe to each week.
This week we have been learning about how polar animals adapt to their environment. We carried out a blubber experiment and found out that we were able to keep our hand in icy water alot longer when there was blubber around it compared to when there was no blubber.
Dosbarth Miss Powell were thrilled to begin our Minecraft Education learning. We started with the basics and by consolidating / introducing the controls, in particular movement!
This week Dosbarth Miss Burgoyne have been learning about maps. As part of this, we went on a welly walk to explore our local area and then created our own maps of New Radnor in class. We have also learnt about physical and human features and identified these on our walk.
As part of our topic, Incredible Inventions, we are exploring electricity. Today, we discussed with Amanda the electric meter and her role in monitoring our electricity in school. We then created a simple circuit!
This term, Dosbarth Mrs Curtis and Dosbarth Miss Powell have been focusing on ball skills in Health and Wellbeing. To conclude our learning, volunteers from both classes set up and led various football drills to develop core skills such as dribbling, passing, scoring and defending. We are looking forward to next week with different leaders!
